About Nickel Boat

While Float Planes are the real stars of the show, this website chronicles seaplane restoration and the adventures of float flying in the Pacific Northwest.

What's a Nickel Boat?

An all-time favorite flying boat is the Martin PBM Mariner. The Mariner type served as a patrol bomber during WWII, and was credited with sinking ten U-Boats in the war. One Mariner, nicknamed the "Nickel Boat", incredibly sunk two of them off the coast of South America: U-128 and U-513. Only two known Mariners remain - one I'm fortunate to have visited in Pima Arizona, and the other is a stones-throw away from KRNT at the bottom of Lake Washington.

Why Float Planes?

Float Planes represent a golden age of civil aviation, there's nothing quite like the romance and luxury that comes to mind when picturing the massive flying boats of the 30's and 40's.

In addition to large scale luxury, float planes are adventure machines, and can take you to all sorts of incredible places.
